Mont St Michel Proposal Locations – The Marshlands

Here are the details of where and how we surprised your loved one with their proposal at the Mont St Michel.

If you’re coming from the car parks:

You can either catch the free shuttle bus (orange line) and get off at the second stop called ‘Le Barrage’ which is the dam.

Or you can walk from the car park as if you’re going to walk all the way to the Mont. (Yellow Line) It takes about ten minutes (which is often quicker than queueing for the shuttle bus).

As you follow the footpath it’ll eventually join the main road to go across the bridge. Look out for the large brown posts on your right. Just after them is the path to an old farm gate (see photo).

You ARE allowed to go through the gate as it is a public footpath. It is only there to stop the famous ‘pré-salé sheep from gettting out of their field.

Please make sure you shut the gate successfully (I once had to chase eight sheep to get them back into the field, just after a proposal moment ! 😂)

If you’re coming from the island:

If you have the time and the energy you can walk from the Mont. It is further than it looks though. To the dam it is about 1.25 miles (2 kms) and takes about 25 minutes to walk. Alternatively you can simply catch the shuttle bus and get off at the first stop, Le Barrage, the dam. This is quicker but you may have to queue to catch the shuttle depending on the time of day.

The Surprise

As you come through the gate you’ll see me in the distance. Follow the footpath, not too far to walk, it’s away from the tourists and crowds, which allows you to have your personal intimate moment and it’s got a nice straight view of the from the bridge that curves towards it.

I’d be there pretending to take photos of the Mont or even pretending to talk to someone on my phone. You would walk off the path onto the grassy marshlands area to position yourselves in front of me, in between me and the Mont. Ideally you’ll be only about 10 metres/yards in front of me.

When you chose your position, I’ll adjust mine to get a good angle. If you can, try and have your back a little towards me so I can see her face.

Then it’s up to you, just go for it. Try not to wait too long so she doesn’t have too much time to spot me.

Proposal Tips

  • Don’t forget to disactivate message notifcations on your lock screen in case we need to message
  • Try not to bring too much stuff with you. Avoid bags, bottles and anything unnecessary.
  • If you want to get dressed up, tell her you’ve booked a post restaurant.
  • Suggest taking a picture of her looking at the Mont. This will give you a few seconds to get the ring and get down on bended knee.
  • Try and turn your back a little towards me to be sure that I can see her face and capture her reaction.

Take a deep breath and ENJOY; This is YOUR MOMENT
