The town hall of Percy-en-Normandie contacted me to ask if I would produce their outdoor summer photo exhibition and asked me to propose a theme. I quickly came up with the idea to feature the local artisans, some of whom are well known but others perhaps not so much. The other element that I wanted to show was which businesses large and small have know-how and expertise that is artisanal.
I also proposed that the photo club of the local high school participate as I’m its patron. It’s run by Alexandre Lamy, the maths teacher and amateur photographer. I thought it would be enriching for the students to have a real project to handle from A to Z, such as contacting the artisans to make photo-shoot appointments, capturing the portraits and finally seeing their images printed at 1.5 wide and displayed for three months around the towns of Percy and Le Chefresne.
The town council agreed and the project was planned and then Covid happened. The project was therefore put on the back-burner until this year. The theme seemed to have even more importance after Covid as it seemed a great way to let people know that not only had the artisans and businesses of Percy had survived the financial turmoil of the various confinements but were back providing their services and creating their products as they had before the pandemic.
I found it an enriching project to do as I met and discovered many artisans, their skills and visited many small businesses for capture the portraits to produce the photo exhibtion. It was wonderful meet the people behind the names and logos of local businesses and I thank all of them for their participation.
